As a homebrewing enthusiast, there's always something new to learn, experiment with, or analyze. To stay informed about trends, best practices, and changes in the homebrewing landscape, one must be open to various sources of knowledge. One such invaluable resource is the annual report from the Beer Judge Certification Program (BJCP). The BJCP Annual Report is a review of activities by the various directorates and the President of the BJCP during the course of the previous year. It also includes plans for the future direction of the organization.

This year, I'm embarking on an analytical approach to dissect the 2022 BJCP Annual Report (released June 2023), taking a leaf from the methodology used in my earlier article, "Mastering Homebrewing: A Guide to Analyzing Water Profiles with ChatGPT and PDF Integration". By tapping into the potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), specifically ChatGPT-4, and incorporating a range of PDF plugins, we can go deeper into the data, unlocking fresh insights along the way.

About ChatGPT Plugins

The ChatGPT Plugin model signifies a new paradigm in AI functionality, designed to enhance and extend the capabilities of the base language model. The concept revolves around integrating external tools or services, referred to as plugins, with the AI model, such as ChatGPT, to offer a broader range of functionalities and capabilities.

These plugins can range from simple data retrieval services, like weather updates or news aggregators, to more sophisticated ones, like a PDF reader that can process and extract information from PDF files. In the context of this article, we're using a plugin that can parse and understand the data presented in the 2022 BJCP Annual Report.

This modular approach allows for a highly customizable AI experience, enabling users to tailor the functionality of the AI model to suit their unique needs. Whether it's for data analysis, like in this instance with the BJCP Annual Report, or more complex tasks such as predictive modeling or sentiment analysis, the ChatGPT Plugin model offers an innovative solution to bridge the gap between AI potential and practical utility.

I've experimented with several plugins over the past two months and have learned that their efficacy varies depending on the nature of the document and the kind of analysis needed. For the purpose of dissecting the BJCP Annual Report, I found that both Ai PDF and ChatWithPDF were particularly efficient. These plugins could accurately extract the text, thus enabling ChatGPT-4 to read, interpret, and discuss the content effectively. What I like about Ai PDF is that it provides page numbers associated with the AI output.

Analyzing The Report

Moving forward to the heart of our exploration - the actual analysis. Having connected the online report to ChatGPT-4 via the plugin model, we can now begin probing the AI about the report content in depth. The beauty of this process lies in the natural language processing capabilities of ChatGPT-4. Instead of manually sifting through pages of data, you can pose queries to the AI in plain English (or whichever language you're operating in). It's akin to having a conversation with a well-informed colleague who has already reviewed the report and can summarize and analyze its contents on demand.

Prompt: ChatGPT, can you summarize the main points of the 2022 BJCP Annual Report?

ChatGPT's response to such a prompt can give us an overview of the document. Its capacity to sift through extensive information and distill key points is impressive, saving us time and effort. To dive deeper into specific areas of interest, we can fine-tune our prompts accordingly. For instance:

Prompt: ChatGPT, what changes were highlighted in the section about beer style classifications in the 2022 BJCP Annual Report?

Prompt: What are the plans for the Mead and Cider style guides?

Conclusion

From giving you a general overview to deep-diving into specific areas, the combination of ChatGPT-4 and an effective PDF plugin can be a game-changer in how you approach brewing literature. Whether it's dissecting brewing research papers, analyzing recipes, or exploring brewing history, you can leverage AI to elevate your homebrewing journey.
